Song Lyrics
| Summer's Voice | The Watch Man | Fountain of Dreams

Fountain of Dreams (1999)

The Mountain and the Valley
"One of my earlier songs, it is meant to be as lovingly simple as it is! A philosophical,
if not folky, song about the power of love."

I am the Mountain and you are the valley
my head in the clouds and you are there to hold me.
But when my dreams grow beyond the cold reality
You are there to show me the forest through the trees…through the trees...
I am the fountain and you are the garden
Spewing great intention and you are there to listen
But when the wisdom waters refuse to keep their flow
You are there to show me how to truly grow…and truly know...
I am the schooner and you are the northwind
Sailing the seven seas and only you can take me
But when the winds of reason change by the mighty hand
You can change the currents that guide me back land...to the land...
I am the mountain and you are the valley...

A Question (with No Answer)
" I have always been intrigued by those people who knew it when they found their mates for life... And every
time I ask that person how they knew, I never get an answer! (At least not the one I expect to hear...)"

In the valley of the sun, I found myself an only one…
she was the only one for me
I can't believe I'm finally done searching for the only one…
she's standing right in front of me
My friends all ask me how I know?
But that's a question with no answer that words can ever tell
Oh No…
I've seen the alleys overrun
with broken hearts undone of those who never saw the signs
some betrayed by youth and some deny the truth
from a heart that doesn't lie...
And even they will one day know
the answer to the question that words can never tell
Oh..No…
My friends all ask me how I know?
But that's a question with no answer my friend, that words can never tell
When you take your chances, in the end it's just as well...
That you just know...You Just know
In the valley of the sun
I found myself an only one
she was the only one for me…

Nothing Like Being With You
"This is what happens when you wake up with a song in your head! It was a gift just like that.
The Cha-Cha beat came about by accident! Just ask singer Kristen Olenderski!"

I've got something to tell you that I been waiting' too long…
no, it's not that I love you…but I love you…
Its funny how the simple lines are the one's that get away…
It's been too long so I wrote this song about something that I gotta say
That there's nothing like being with you…
through the wind and the sun and the rain
There's nothing like being with you…
'cept being with you
'when you're feelin' the same…
I've been dying' inside a prisoner of my own words
but don't think I don't love you…'cause I love you …(yes I do..)
I don't care 'bout the clothes you wear or the times we disagree..
Just as long as you stay right there right next to me
'Cause there's nothing like being with you…
through the wind and the sun and the rain
Oh there's nothing like being with you…
'cept being with you___
when you're feelin' the same…
And there's something that I never knew
about the wind and the sun and the rain...
that there's more to love than sayin' you do
it's just being with you

More Than Just a Game
"..and this is what happened when I reached deeply inside myself..."

When he was a bitty boy he asked his daddy for a toy
But he said just go away and make due with what you play
so not today
Then later on and not quite ten and the guts to ask again
but he said stop making noise besides you’re older than the other boys
who have the toys
[Chorus]
The older you get, you don’t forget
The little boy you had you never met
It was more than just the toys
It was more than just the toys
Baseball, the game he grew to love He wished only for a glove
Billy lent him one to play and they played catch all night and day
So a lefty he became…
The older you get, you don’t forget
The little boy you had you never met
It was more than just the game
It was more than just the game
<instr>
At Fourteen daddy said goodbye He never stopped to wonder why
But he asked, while on your way could you drop me off to play?...
If its OK?
The older you get, you don’t forget
The little boy you had you never met
and it was more than just the game
It was more than just the game
<repeat chorus>

Don't Stop Looking Back
"Ok..I know it's silly, but it's s'pposed to be. One of my older songs, I just had to do it this way
because it made fun of a serious message. Keep telling the ones you love that you love them...
otherwise they may be gone..."

When you find the kind of girl who looks in your eyes
and she sighs when she smiles and smiles when she sighs
When you find the kind of girl who looks in your eyes
Don’t stop looking back!
[chorus]
Don't stop looking back
and she’ll stay right there
Just as long as you do
Don’t stop looking back
its OK to stare
Just as long as you do
When you find the kind of girl who looks in your eyes
she loves the short hello and hates the long good-byes
If you look at other girls, she'll look at other guys
So...don’t stop looking back!
<chorus>
Now you found the kind of girl who looks in your eyes
and you're telling her the truth while she's telling you no lies
and she'll stay if you blink once but she's gone if you blink twice...
So, don’t stop looking back
Don't stop looking back and she’ll stay right there
Just as long as you do...
Don’t stop looking back its OK to stare
Just as long as you do...
Don’t stop looking back it just means you care
Just as long as you do...

In Shannon's Eyes
"This was a gift too. Almost a mystical creation when I first uttered.."On dear Ireland I was...with nigh
one reason I could find" I must say, that I get a lot of requests for this one."

On dear Ireland I was
with nigh one reason I could find
there but only just because
to look into Shannon's eyes
and so they gaze upon mine own
and all the while I wonder how
'cause I thought I'd never know
the way I feel right now
When I look into Shannon's eyes
down her roads and merry ways
through the meadows and the sties
I hear the happy cries of the children where they play
When I look into Shannon's eyes
I know I'll never look away…
On dear Ireland I was
with nigh one reason I could find
there but only just because
to look into Shannon's eyes…

The Legend of Culp's Hill
""If you ever go to Gettysburgh, visit Culp's Hill and embrace yourself in the legend. Based on fact,
it is my way of paying respect to all Americans lost in the Civil War."

The twinkle in Jessie’s eye told of Wesley his son,
Born and raised on this Pennsylvania farm...
And like his dad before him had ushered just the same
on a hill that bore the family name. (repeat)
But Wesley, just seventeen and a rebel in his soul
left his plowshare to make the buggies roll.
And when his job moved south, he packed everything he had...
and at the bottom of the hill, Wesley listed to his dad....
and he said,
Son, I know that on a summer day
behind your blue eyes and trousers gray
you’ll be coming home to stay
you’ll be coming home to stay
So then began troubled times in a most uncivil war
a country divided into north and southern shore
Now twenty one, and still a rebel in his soul
He answered the call to join the southern cause
So in the summer if ‘63 on orders from General Lee
to invade the north town where the five supply roads meet
Wesley packed his gun and rolled his soldier bed
and while he did he thought about what his father said
and he said…
Son, I know that on a summer day
behind your blue eyes and trousers grey
you’ll be coming to stay
Oh you’ll be coming home to stay
When they marched on into town, he’d seen the place before
The silence of the wheatfield long before the cannon’s roar
And sister made his favorite shoo fly pie
tasting bittersweet when time to say goodbye.
Well the battle wore fierce and the Rock Creek flowed with blood
where Wesley learned to swim in a recent childhood
But when the smoke had cleared for the lucky and the lame
Wesley had fallen on the hill that bore his name
and the echo still refrained of…
Son, I know that on a summer day
behind your blue eyes and trousers grey
You'll be coming home to stay
You'll be coming home to stay

The Ace in Grace – For Arthur
"When I was a kid, Arthur Ashe was my hero. I loved tennis (still do!), his game, his grace, and most of all,
his attitude. I tried to emulate him - which accounts for my booming serve to this day! He's still a hero to me,
and for most of the same reasons - He faced his condition with strength and courage - just as he did growing
up playing a white man's game."

Well I remember as a kid, all the things I ever did
to play the game like you..the ace in grace I never knew
And I’d assume your quiet trance in preparation for the dance
and serve an ace or two...the ace in grace I never knew
The ace in grace I never knew, I wish I had someone like you
to teach me how to play and look up to and say...
Do you remember as a kid? all the things you ever did
to do what they said that you could not we'll I guess you just forgot
And fighting down two sets to one in matches just begun
and even in defeat, the ace in grace had always won
And I remember all the kids and all the things you ever did
teaching to serve their fellow man and always shake his hand
To be proud of who they are and try reaching for the stars
and to know the meaning of your special kind of ___love
The ace in grace I never knew…I think I've changed my point of view
Seeing now that I am grown…The ace in grace I've always known
Seeing how that I have grown…The ace in grace I've always known

Fontana dei sogni – instrumental

"Meaning 'Fountain of Dreams' in Italian, I have played this little instrumental for as long as I can remember."

The Road
"Did you ever wonder how you could turn heartbreak into something positive? That's what I did here.
It may not be my best song, but it came from that place. 'nuff said."

On this road I call my life that winds through the valleys and the hills
And on the highlands I take my time pickin' all the golden daffodils…
Sometimes I walk and sometimes I run…
sometimes I end up where I started from
Sometimes I fall and sometimes I crawl
Never asking why,
that's just the mystery of life...
So I go along my way crossing all the rivers and the streams
But for all the beauty that I have seen I think of the woman of my dreams…
but dreams get lost along the highway
rushing where you think you have-to-go
and if she's ever going my way
again I'll know, then I'll know to take the road…
At every crossroad we made the choice to take the road least traveled by
But when the time came to decide the way, she chose the road that said
goodbye
Sometimes I walk and sometimes I run…
sometimes I end up where I started from
Sometimes I fall and sometimes I crawl
Never asking why… that's just the mystery of life...
On this road I call my life that winds through the valleys and the hills
And on the highlands I take my time to tell the wind I love her still...

Oh Clitheroe! – For Sarah
"Back in the last century ('94/'95) I had a neighbor named Sarah who was a nanny. She was here for one year
from - you guessed it - Clitheroe, England. I sat her down one day out of curiosity and asked her to tell me
about her home town (not with the intent of writing a song!). With the images she shared with me, I started
typing away like a maniac. This was the end result - with some creative license of course!"

There was little ‘cept the name that gave the town its fame
When Clithe married Roe you know, its never been the same
With a castle on a hill while the Ribble turned the mill
Sunday mornin’ churchbells ring and you could hear the townsfolk sing...
<chorus>
Clitheroe-Oh Clitheroe!
Why she left we’ll never know
this market town and fields of green...
River Ribble to the sea
Clitheroe-Oh Clitheroe!
She just said she had to go
Left her friends and family
to journey across the sea____
On a patchwork of green, like a quilt you’ve never seen
Found a piece to call their own and grew their family
First a house then a home that rattled when the train’s light shone
But n'er the girls awoke as silently Clyde spoke...
<chorus>
Sarah, young Sarah, only eighteen and some
tousled hair and not a care left kid sis with dad and mum
and Annie and Molly Yorkshire mix and full bred collie
curled on her empty bed as silently Roe said....
<chorus>
<repeat chorus>
